The IRIDIA laboratory of Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) has one open PhD position for research on the automatic design and configuration of heuristic and/or exact algorithms for computationally hard optimization problems.

Candidates should have an excellent background in computer science and/or operations research; more particular, a solid formation in algorithms, optimization, machine learning, statistics as well as excellent programming skills are required. Very good communication and writing skills in English are expected. The candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Thomas Stuetzle.

IRIDIA is the computational intelligence laboratory of Université Libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium. IRIDIA is a multi-disciplinary laboratory with active research lines on swarm intelligence, heuristic optimization, and swarm robotics; it is also very international with researchers of more than 10 different nationalities and English as working language.

The appointment can be for a maximum of four years (with annual evaluation) with a net monthly fellowship of more than 1750 Euros.

 Bayesian Machine Learning for Personalization of Audio Processing Systems

 Description


 A 4-year Ph.D. program is available at the Signal Processing System group (http://w3.ele.tue.nl/en/sps) at the Technical University Eindhoven. This research program is aimed at developing modern machine learning methods that lead to improved performance of audio processing algorithms (e.g., for hearing aids). In particular, our approach is to study models of human (brain) learning and adaptation and apply these ideas to the design of personalized audio processing applications. Key areas of interest include Bayesian machine learning, graphical models (factor graphs), computational neurosciences and signal processing.

 Requirements


 Successful candidates should be a good match to the following profile:

 - a M.Sc.-degree in either electrical engineering, computer science, math or physics;

 - a record that shows specific interest in any or more of the following fields: signal processing, machine learning, computational neurosciences;

 - experience in scientific programming, preferably in MATLAB;

 - good written and spoken command of English language;

 The Department of Biostatistics and Computational Biology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute seeks a postdoctoral fellow in bioinformatics, to work with Drs. Nikhil Munshi and Giovanni Parmigiani on bioinformatics projects within the outstanding multiple myeloma program at DFCI. The position offers excellent scientific training opportunities in a highly stimulating and interdisciplinary environment involving close interactions between computational scientists, medical oncologists and basic scientists.

 Qualifications:
Applicants should have a strong quantitative background and hold a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Statistics or Biostatistics. Previous interdisciplinary collaboration experience, and previous experience with ChIP-seq or other second generation sequencing data are highly desirable. Good communication and programming skills are required.

In the framework of FP7 project RACE ("Robustness by
Autonomous Competence Enhancement"), the Institute for
Electronics and Telematics Engineering (IEETA), University
of Aveiro, intends to fill, in the near future, a post-
doctoral research position, under a "Contrato a Termo
Resolutivo Certo" (a fixed-term work contract for one
year, renewable up to three years, index 195, about 45,000
euros / year), in the area of Intelligent Robotics.

The hired person will carry out research work as part of
the participation of the University of Aveiro in the
mentioned project, focusing on the design and development
of the semantic interpretation, high-level learning and
human-robot interaction modules for an intelligent robot
with manipulation capabilities.

To this effect, IEETA is interested in gathering detailed
curricula of potential stakeholders in the mentioned
position.

The RACE project
-----------------------------------------------------------
The overall aim of this EU FP7 project is to develop an
artificial cognitive system able to build a high-level
understanding of the world it inhabits by storing and
exploiting appropriate memories of its experiences. Robot
competence is obtained by abstracting and generalising
from experiences, extending task planning and execution
beyond preconceived situations. The project aims to
produce the following key results: (i) Robots capable
of storing experiences in their memory in terms of
multi-level representations connecting actuator and
sensory experiences with meaningful high-level structures,
(ii) Methods for learning and generalising from experiences
obtained from behaviour in realistically scaled
real-world environments, (iii) Robots demonstrating
superior robustness and effectiveness in new situations
and unknown environments using experience-based planning
and behaviour adaptation. The project developments will be
integrated and demonstrated on a PR2 robot, from
Willow Garage.

The University of Aveiro is involved in the development
of modules concerned with semantic interpretation,
recording of experiences of plan-based activities,
high-level learning about robot activities, and
human-robot interaction.

Topic: Linguistic Description of Complex Phenomena
Description: The objective of the project is the design and development of a new family of computational systems capable of generating linguistic descriptions of complex phenomena. This type of systems will be used in supervision and control applications and especially in the development of user interfaces based on the use of natural language. On a theoretical level, we expect to make significant contributions in the research line of Computing with Words and Perceptions proposed by L.A. Zadeh. On the practical level, we will produce a methodology and various application prototypes that will represent the core for the industrial exploitation of the new methodology.
Required academic degree: Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering or Physics.

The Intelligent Autonomous Systems Group invites applications for several research positions (postdoc/phd) in the domain of robot learning and reinforcement learning. The core focus of the group evolves around the problem how we can endow robots with new motor skill and allow them to self-improve their abilities. In order to approach this topic, we develop novel machine learning methods, evaluate possibilities from the perspective of classical robotics and follow biological inspiration from human motor control. 
The researcher will be embedded in this highly international research group lead by Jan Peters which is centered at Darmstadt, Germany but is tightly intertwined with the Department of Empirical Inference & Machine Learning at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems as well as the Computational Learning and Motor Control Lab at the University of Southern California. The researcher will encouraged to partake in the our collaborations with many important machine learning and robotics groups in North America, Europe and Japan. The student will work in the framework of a European research project on robotic and ubiquitous cognitive networks. Postdoctoral Position Available Center for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems (AASS) Orebro University, Sweden
Applications are invited for a position as a post-doctoral researcher in the area of hybrid planning at Orebro University, Sweden. This is an initial 18 month appointment fully funded within the EU project GeRT -- "Generalizing Robot Manipulation Tasks". Interested candidates can apply now and until the position is filled.
In order to work naturally in human environments such as offices and homes, robots in the future will need to be much more flexible and robust in the face of novelty than they are today. In the GeRT project we address this problem by developing new methods to cope with such novelty in manipulation tasks. The overall aim of the GeRT project is to enable a robot to autonomously generalize its manipulation skills from a set of known objects to previously unmanipulated objects. To do so, the GeRT project includes research activities in the areas of hybrid planning (see below), perception, learning and grasping. The platform used within GeRT is the DLR robot Justin, a very advanced robot with two arms with four-fingered hands. The GeRT consortium consists of four European partners: the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Max Planck Institute (Germany), the University of Birmingham (UK), and Orebro University (Sweden). The successful candidate will be employed as a postdoc with Orebro University for an expected duration of 18 months. The main task of the postdoc will be to perform world-class research on hybrid planning in the context of the GeRT project. Hybrid planning in this context means that, when planning for a task, the robot needs to reason both about the purposes of actions on a symbolic level, and about the kinematics and geometry of the robot and the objects it manipulates. The research is expected to involve a suitable combination of theoretical investigation, concrete implementation, and empirical validation on the Justin platform at DLR. The postdoc will work within the local GeRT team at Orebro University, which currently includes two faculties, a postdoc and a PhD student. She or he will also collaborate with the other European partners in the GeRT project, both remotely and through physical meetings and research visits. A small amount of teaching may also be part of the postdoc's duties. 
In addition to a clear interest in the research topic, the successful applicant must have a strong theoretical background in computer science, and solid programming skills. A PhD in computer science, computer engineering or comparable field is required. We particularly seek candidates with experience in artificial intelligence and planning, and with inclinations towards cross-disciplinary research. Knowledge of the Swedish language is not required, but proficiency in written/spoken English is mandatory. PhD subject Decision support in Agronomy using spatialized data
Funding PhD position in Artificial Intelligence at INRA (French National Institute for Agricultural Research) - SupAgro Montpellier (International Center for Higher Education in Agriculture Sciences) The PhD objective is to develop generic reasoning tools that consider the spatio-temporal data char- acteristics, using agricultural real world case studies, for example pesticides reduction and culture protection.
Prerequisite
A degree in computer science (artificial intelligence), with skills in uncertainty reasoning. A desire to work on real world applications and an interest for programming (C++, java).

The Knowledge Technology Group has an open position for a
Scientific Associate (Postdoc or PhD candidate) in the context
of an International Master Computer Science and Intelligent Systems,
salary group 13 TV-L (equivalent to Verg.Gr. IIa BAT).


Responsibilities:
The duties include academic service in the area of new MSc
programme development as well as research in intelligent systems.
The successful candidate will - within a team - develop and manage
a new international Master Programme in Computer Science and
Intelligent Systems as well as contribute to its teaching.
Furthermore, the candidate is expected to conduct research in the
area of Knowledge Technology and Intelligent Systems. This post is
open to Postdocs or PhD candidates. PhD candidates have the
opportunity to advance their  academic education through the
completion  of a doctoral dissertation.


Requirements:
Academic degree preferably in computer science qualifying the
holder to carry out the above-mentioned  responsibilities. In
particular, an MSc or PhD in Artificial Intelligence or Computer
Science is essential.  Your demonstrated research interests should
be in the areas of Knowledge Technology and Intelligent Systems
(e.g. Machine Learning, Neural Networks, Robotics, Natural Language
Processing, Vision, or Knowledge Representation  etc). We are also
looking for very good communication skills and  teamwork, in
particular a very good command of both German and English is a
requirement. Experience or a keen interest in developing a new MSc
programme and very good programming skills are a plus.


The position is fulltime (39 hours per week). The initial
contract will be for two years and can be extended
for an additional three years (see also § 2 of the Academic
Fixed-Term  Contract Law (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz)).

2 PhD Studentships

Neural Multimodal Integration &
Neural Speech  Localisation)


The Knowledge Technology Research Group is looking to fill two
fulltime PhD studentships funded by the DFG in the context of the
International Research Training Group CINACS
( http://www.cinacs.org/ ) . The project  offers a 3-year doctoral
programme based at the  University of Hamburg and at Tsinghua
University, Beijing. The  dissertation projects will be carried out
at the University of Hamburg.  A part of the  studies (a few months)
can  be performed at Tsinghua University. The interdisciplinary
programme provides exciting research  opportunities in multisensory
perception and cross-modal information processing.


Responsibilities:
The candidate is expected to conduct research in the area of
Knowledge Technology and Neural Network Robotics. In these two
subprojects we are particularly  focused on working towards
a) neural multimodal  integration based on the superior colliculus
and b) neural sound  localisation for speech processing based on the
inferior colliculus. We use an attractive humanoid robot scenario
where humanoid robots interact with humans based on multimodal
information. This includes the integration of an ambient environment
with new cognitive humanoid robots.


Requirements:
Academic degree preferably in computer science or related qualifying
the holder to carry out the above-mentioned  responsibilities. In
particular, an MSc or equivalent in  computer science, artificial
intelligence, robotics, engineering or equivalent is essential.
Knowledge of artificial  intelligence, neural networks or robotics
and an interest to work in an  interdisciplinary environment will be
important. The post involves international travel.  We are looking
for excellent programming skills, e.g. in C++, C, Python, Java etc.
We are also looking for very good communication skills and  teamwork,
including very good knowledge of English. Knowledge of German would
be desirable. The PhD stipend is for three years (2 plus 1) in
fulltime mode.

Three PhD positions in Computer Science are available at the AASS
Mobile Robotics Lab of Örebro University, Sweden, on the following
research topics.

* Topic 1: Human-Aware Planning for Mobile Robots. This project is
concerned with artificial intelligence techniques for robot task
planning where one or several domestic robots gather information
about the activities of the human inhabitants. This information is
then used when the robots plan how to perform their tasks, in order
to e.g. avoid interference.

* Topic 2: Cognitive Electronic Noses. This project aims to develop a
system which combines low -level signals from olfactory (gas) sensors
with high-level knowledge representing the context, causes and
composition of odours. The aim is to create a recognition system that
can be applied to a number of application domains within medical
diagnosis, environmental monitoring and food quality monitoring.

* Topic 3: Robotics Ubiquitous Cognitive Network. This project combines
traditional artificial intelligence reasoning techniques for networked
robot systems with dynamic learning. The research is part of a larger
European research project aiming at the creation of a self-organising
and goal oriented ecology of networked robotic devices.

Candidates should have a strong background in computer science and
specifically in artificial intelligence. Detailed information about

Two postdoctoral positions are immediately available at Imperial's Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, to work on bionspired social learning algorithms for  human-robot interaction. You will be working in a new EU FP7 STREP project, EFAA, to develop bioinspired algorithms for enabling humanoid robots to learn transferable sensorimotor and cognitive skills through multimodal interaction with human users in the context of tabletop games. Experience with modelling biological learning processes (particularly in the context of social cognitive neuroscience), for example using neural networks or bayesian models, and/or programming and control of complex humanoid robots (e.g. the icub) would be beneficial.

The positions offer an exciting research topic and an excellent working environment in one of the world's top research universities; the positions are for the project's duration of 3 years.

Call for Post-Doc Position at MoreLab Research Group
MoreLab Research Group (http://www.morelab.deusto.es), belonging to DeustoTech INTERNET unit, focuses its activity around the theme “Ubiquitous Intelligent Systems of Services”. DeustoTech – Deusto Institute of Technology (http://www.deustotech.eu/), is the research institute associated to the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Deusto. MoreLab was created in 2004 and since then has grown rapidly. We are now 30 members of staff and we are currently running about 10 applied research projects, most of them as part of big consortiums in FP7, CELTIC, ITEA2 and Spanish Avanza programs. We are also running 2 basic research projects, one financed by the Spanish Government and another one for the Basque Government. The most senior members of our team belong to the research team DEUSTEK2 (led by MoreLab’s Principal Researcher Dr. Diego López-de-Ipiña) which is an official research team recognized by the Basque Government’s University System. The main research topics tackled by our group are Ambient Intelligence, Internet of Things, mobile-mediated human-environment interaction, semantic middleware for Intelligent Environments, WebLabs, RFID and NFC, or Internet of Services. Notably, we have been working on Ambient Intelligence since 2003 when the SmarLab research lab (http://www.smartlab.deusto.es) was created. In this lab, we carry out our research on both hardware and software technologies that allow the intelligent instrumentation of environments (e.g. homes, offices or cities). Multi-device, multi-object intelligent service provision, consumption, orchestration and coordination within those Smart Environments aided by Semantic Web is our current main research focus.
We are currently seeking for a PostDoc. The main role of the candidate will be to identify the most scientific elements of the projects we are carrying out and contribute to the team with the production of high quality, high impact publications. Additionally, the PostDoc will help the Principal Researcher Dr. Diego López-de-Ipiña (http://paginaspersonales.deusto.es/dipina), identifying new strategic research opportunities. The PostDoc will also co-supervise some of the PhD dissertations currently underway in the team. Finally, the PostDoc will take active part in the preparation of new scientifically challenging European proposals, supervising at most one highly relevant project for him/her per year. The following aspects will be taken into account, in the order given, when assessing the suitability of the candidate:  
  • Have a significant research experience and publication record.
  • Alignment of the candidate research interests with our research group interests.
  • Have ideally worked in research for 3 years after obtaining his/her PhD.
  • Be first author in at least 1 JCR-indexed journal per year starting from the date when the candidate finished his/her PhD.

A PhD position in the area of autonomous robotics is available at the
AASS Mobile Robotics Lab, Orebro University, Sweden. This is a 3-year
PhD position fully funded within the EU project GeRT - "Generalizing
Robot Manipulation Tasks".

This position is for an immediate start, and it will be open until a
suitable candidate is found.


ABOUT THE PROJECT:

In order to work naturally in human environments such as offices and
homes, robots in the future will need to be much more flexible and robust
in the face of novelty than they are today. In the GeRT project we will
address this problem by developing new methods to cope with such novelty
in manipulation tasks. The overall aim of the GeRT project is to enable a
robot to autonomously generalise its manipulation skills from a set of
known objects to previously unmanipulated objects in order to achieve an
everyday manipulation task. The platform that will be used within GeRT is
the DLR robot Justin, an advanced robot with two arms with four-fingered
hands. The GeRT consortium consists of four European partners: the German
Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Max Planck Institute from Germany, the
University of Birmingham from Great Britain, and Orebro University from
Sweden.

The student will do research about hybrid planning for the robot in the
context of the GeRT project. This means that, when planning for a task,
the robot needs to reason both about the purposes of actions on a symbolic
level, and about the kinematics and geometry of the robot and the objects
it manipulate. Apart from working towards the PhD thesis, the enrolled
PhD student will be involved in the project work, which is expected to
include research visits to our European partners.


ABOUT OREBRO UNIVERSITY:

Orebro University (www.oru.se) is a young university currently enrolling
more than 15,000 students. It is located in Orebro, a city of 130,000
inhabitants situated in central Sweden.

The AASS Mobile Robotics Lab is one of the three research groups within
the Center for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems (AASS). AASS carries
out multi-disciplinary research at the intersection of robotics, machine
learning, artificial intelligence, computer vision, computer science,
and measurement technology. The research and human environment at AASS
is young and enthusiastic. Researchers come from a dozen different
countries, in Europe and worldwide, and have different scientific and
cultural backgrounds. AASS also frequently hosts international
researchers and is involved in several international projects. This
means, particularly in the GeRT project, that the enrolled PhD student
will have the opportunity to travel and to cooperate with people in
other countries.

The AASS Mobile Robotics Lab is internationally renowned for its
research in cognitive robots, robot ecologies and artificial olfaction.

Dear all,

In the context of a 3 years project funded by the french research agency ANR, we are looking for highly skilled and motivated candidates for a PhD or a Postdoc in the fields of developmental robotics, machine learning and computer vision with evaluation on the iCub humanoid robot.

The global project aims at addressing 4 complementary challenges that have been identified as crucial to the development of future humanoid robotics:

* CHALLENGE 1: How can a robot learn efficient perceptual representations of its body and of external objects given initially only low-level perceptual capabilities?
* CHALLENGE 2: How can a robot learn motor representations and use them to build basic affordant reaching and manipulation skills?
* CHALLENGE 3: What guidance heuristics, based on intrinsic motivation, active learning and social guidance, should be used to explore vast sensorimotor spaces in unknown changing bodies and environments?
* CHALLENGE 4: How can mechanisms for building efficient representations/abstractions, mechanisms for learning manipulation skills, and guidance mechanisms be integrated in the same experimental robotic architecture and reused for different robots?

These 4 interrelated challenges are distributed over four partners:

Umeå University in Sweden, Department of Computing Science, is seeking outstanding candidates for a PhD student position in Field Robotics.
The position is part of CROpS, an EU funded project with 15 partners. The aim of the project is to develop software and hardware for robotized selective harvesting of fruit (i.e., to detect the fruit, determine its ripeness, move towards it, grasp it and softly detach it). Another application is targeted spraying on foliage and selected targets. The project will also develop techniques for reliable detection and classification of obstacles and other objects to enable successful autonomous navigation and operation in plantations and forests.
The successful applicant will work with a selection of the following research tasks:
Sensing and perception in agriculture and forest environments:
- Detection, classification, estimation of object properties, and estimation of ground bearing capacity
- Adaptive sensor fusion and learning in sensing
- An interactive tool for customization and adaption of the perception system
Learning in grasping of fruits with robot manipulators:
- Combination of grasp sequences into parameterized high-level skills, where parameters for instance may describe the relative position and shape of the target object
- A behaviour editor to serve as an interface for human-robot interaction in the learning process
